The first millennial Catholic is months away from joining the communion of saints.
On Friday, June 13, it was announced that Carlo Acutis, a millennial known to many as "God's influencer," will be canonized on Sept. 7, 2025, the Vatican News confirmed.
Acutis died at the age of 15 after being treated for Leukemia on Oct. 12, 2006. The British teen was born on May 3, 1991.
A web designer, he became a prominent member of the Catholic Church and used his knowledge of technology to help educate others about Eucharistic miracles. After his death, Acutis' body was put on display in Assisi, Italy.
The late teen was originally set to be canonized on April 27. However, the ceremony was delayed by the death of Pope Francis. The former leader of the Catholic Church died at the age of 88 on April 21.
In July 2024, it was confirmed that the late Pope approved Acutis for sainthood. The decision came one month after he attributed a second miracle to the teen.
According to the Vatican News, Acutis is believed to have healed a college-aged student named Valeria in July 2022. She suffered "severe head trauma and multiple other injuries after falling from her bicycle."
Valeria's mother, Liliana, prayed to Acutis and traveled to his tomb in Assisi. Despite having a "very low chance of survival," Valeria began to show marked signs of improvement the day that Liliana arrived at the temple.
In order to be considered for sainthood, a contender needs to have two miracles attributed to them.
Acutis' first miracle was recorded in 2020, according to CNN. He is said to have helped heal a Brazilian boy after his mother offered up prayers in Acutis' name.
After the feat was recognized, Pope Francis beatified Acutis, which means that he was referred to as "Blessed."
Pope Leo announced plans for the canonization on Friday during his Ordinary Public Consistory, a meeting with the College of Cardinals, which he oversees, the Catholic News Agency reported.
The late teen will be canonized alongside Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, another young saint-to-be who lived almost 100 years earlier.
According to CNN, he was born in 1901 and died at the age of 24. He was originally scheduled to attain sainthood on Aug. 3. However, the ceremony was similarly delayed after the death of Pope Francis.
Acutis will become the first millennial saint. A millennial is anyone born between the years 1981 and 1996.
